“Alright,” the woman interviewing us said.

She turned to the camera with a bright smile as I leaned a little closer into Brody’s side. Our joined hands were in his lap. To the people watching, we looked like a happy couple.

Inside, my mind was a mess.

“Brody and Layla have been such amazing guests today,” the woman said, pausing for the audience’s cheering. “Such amazing guests that we have a surprise for them.”

“A surprise?” Brody asked, his tone oozing charm as he glanced at me. “I didn’t know anything about a surprise. Did you?”

“Not even a little bit,” I said.

I was grateful to have him there. While the cameras were becoming part of my daily life — at least it seemed that way — I was still yet to master the art of answering questions about myself. Trying to charm an interviewer and an audience at home seemed like an impossible task unless Brody was the one doing the talking. He made his interviews seem effortless.

Of course, that is what years of training will do for you.

“Oh yes,” the woman said. “Brody, you have been chosen for a very special celebrity hockey game taking place in just under twelve weeks. Layla, this is a surprise for you too. I’ve spoken to the NHL, and they would love to have you sing the national anthem.”

The date of the game appeared on the screen behind us and the teleprompter in front of us. I stopped hearing what the interviewer was saying as I looked at the date.

Day ninety.

The game was going to take place on the last day of our contract. We would put on one final show as boyfriend and girlfriend before moving on with our lives.

“Thank you so much,” I said after Brody gave my hand a slight squeeze, drawing me out of my thoughts and back into my own body. “This is an amazing opportunity.”

A few minutes later, we were backstage, and the surprise was just starting to sink in. If you wanted respect in the music community, you sang the anthem at a hockey game. I was getting the opportunity to do just that.

“Holy shit,” I said, turning to face Brody with wide eyes. “Did that really just happen?”

“One minute,” he said, pulling his phone out of his pocket and answering the call. “Hey, Sheila. Yes. I know. It’s an amazing opportunity for the both of us. I can’t believe that they were willing to allow me to play after all that has been going on.”

Brody paced back and forth as he talked to Sheila, one hand in his pocket and the other holding the phone to his ear. I took a moment to admire him before running my hand through my hair. This was unbelievable.

“Holy shit!” Brody said as soon as he put the phone back in his pocket. “We’re going to do this!”

I squealed and threw myself at him, pulling him into a tight hug. Brody laughed and grabbed me around the waist, spinning me in a circle before putting me back down.
